(ER023) Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt – KILLING CUPID
Again we are blessed with the presence of Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt, whose monstrous, screaming monoliths are establishing themselves as forces to be reckoned with. The subtlety to the execution is what makes it such an adrenaline rush. Vehement, shapeless matter exercising its mantle of strength, but not alone. In his work, incredibly evident in KILLING CUPID, there is a large focal point on subliminal alteration. A static wall that quietly and hypnotically shatters and spills with harsh vocals, guitar squeals, percussive immensity, and jarring prolonged purges of glitchy, raw noise. The disorientation of this album is undeniable and most welcome. One’s brain begins forming illusions of its own surrendering to this single purging avalanche. The line between real and unreal snaps, and the sound envelopes you, persisting, not letting go until it comes to a close, only about 10 minutes but fulfilling nevertheless. This amazing track draws from longstanding traditions in drone music but still inhibiting absolute idiosyncrasy. A fierce voice, a thoughtful artist, a hell of a piece!
